The guernsey sweater, said to be the prototype of fisherman sweaters (cold weather clothing worn by fishermen), is said to have been named after the island of Guernsey between England and France. It is said to have existed since the 16th century and is said to be the oldest sweater in England. It was loved by royal families such as Elizabeth I and Mary, Princess of Scots, and was also used in the uniforms of the British Navy in the 19th century.
